Happy Gigasecond, Flexagon
Tonight at approximately 3:54am EST, [info]flexagon will be one billion seconds old. She wasn't aware of this until I told her at dinner a couple hours ago. I think she was glad I decided to tell her in advance, rather than wake her up and tell her on the spot.

I didn't happen to find any spectacular jewelry for the occasion, but I did have a good idea for a nice custom-made gift a couple weeks ago, which conveniently arrived this morning. It's a custom laptop skin for her company-provided MacBook Pro, featuring a really lucky shot I took of Serabi a few years ago:

(The border is a closeup of condensation on a water glass, from around the same time.)

I also made one for myself with this too-perfect shot of Ralph:

so how does it interact with the glowing mac behind it? is it opaque?

It's not installed yet-- in fact she already had a fairly new skin, so it probably won't get used for a while-- but I think they're generally semi-opaque, so you can see the apple a bit when it's on. They also have ones where the apple is cut out.

Mine's for a Thinkpad (which I don't even have yet), so it won't have that issue.

It would be even cooler if you could upload an image with an alpha channel, and have it come out clear or semi-clear where you want. That would have solved my problem of trying to make the borders match the color of the laptop. And then you could do cool things with the glowing logo.

that would indeed be clever and awesome... i'm surprised no one's doing it.
(though i guess it would require the underlying medium to be transparent/pleasantly translucent...)
